Downloading E-Books: Ebook Central

ProQuest Ebook Central is an eBook database, available to current Seneca students, faculty, and staff through Seneca Libraries.

It contains thousands of downloadable eBook titles covering all academic disciplines.

(Seneca username and password are required)

To download an eBook from Ebook Central, to your Windows or Mac computer, you will need to download a free app called Adobe Digital Editions.

How to Download an eBook from Ebook Central

Go to the Seneca library homepage:

  • In the search box, TYPE in the title of the book you want.

    • CLICK the link beside the photo of the book cover or Full Text Available/Online Access below it to open the record

      • CLICK Proquest Ebook Central.

Once you are in the Ebook Central database:

  • CLICK Download Book, located under the book cover.

    • CLICK Open Book in the pop-up window.

      • CLICK the download icon on the far left of the taskbar.  

Ebook Central will now prompt you to do the following:

  • SELECT the type of device you are using.  

    • CLICK the link to install the free Adobe Digital Editions software (if you have not installed it already). Then CLICK Done With This Step

      • SELECT the download period (1 day to 3 weeks). And if asked, SELECTdownload format (PDF or EPUB). 

        • Then CLICK  Download Your Book to finish and then CLICK save for the eBook to upload to your computer or laptop's Adobe Digital Editions app. 


1) You have not downloaded  Adobe Digital Editions onto your computer/laptop or phone: 

2) You have not created an Adobe ID:

  • After you download Adobe Digital Editions, you will be asked to create a free Adobe ID. For more questions about this, please see here  

3) You already created an Adobe ID and can not remember it:

4) You have not activated Adobe Digital Editions on your computer:

  • To do so, open Adobe Digital Editions and go to Help. SELECT Authorize. Then do one of the following: 

    • For your eBooks to be available on up to 5 of your devices, you must SIGN IN with your Adobe ID and  CLICK Authorize.

      • For your eBooks to download to your current device only:

      • SELECT "I want to authorize my computer without an ID"

        • CLICK Next

        • CLICK Authorize

5) You have not activated your phone's Adobe Digital Editions app:

  • Open the app

    •  Go to Settings

      •  SIGN IN with your Adobe ID (log in and password)

        • SELECT Authorize.

6) Your mobile device is not compatible with Adobe Digital Editions:

7) The book you want to download is being used by another user:

  • In Ebook Central some eBooks can only be used by one student at a time.

iPhone vs Android:

  • The Adobe Digital Editions app will work on either phone.  (WIth this app, you will be able to download your eBooks from the Ebook Central database.)

Want your eBooks downloaded to both computer/laptop AND your phone?  Then please do the following:

  • Open up Adobe Digital Editions on your computer/laptop.

    • Go to Help and SELECT Authorize Computer 

      • Sign in with your Adobe ID.

      • DO NOT select "I want to authorize my computer without an ID." If you do, your eBooks will only be downloaded to your computer/laptop.

        • CLICK Authorize.   

          • Open the Adobe Digital Editions app. 

            • In Settings

              •  SELECT Authorize.

Phone not letting you download an eBook?

Make sure you do the following on you phone :

  • Enable pop-up messages iSettings (the download instructions will use pop-ups).

  • Open your phone's Adobe Digital Editions app,

    • Go into the ADE's Settings and CLICK Authorize. This will activate the app on your phone.
