Things to consider when selecting children's literature:

Caldecott Medal
Named in honor of 19th century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, the medal is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Coretta Scott King Award
Commemorating the life of Coretta Scott King, it is presented annually to an African American author and an African American illustrator for an inspirational and educational contribution to American children's literature.
Forest Of Reading - Festival Of Trees
The largest children’s literary event in Canada, Forest of Reading Festival of Trees is a reading and Children's Choice Award program organized by the Ontario Library Association. Books are categorized by reading level according to age.
Newbery Medal
Named for 18th century British bookseller John Newbery, the medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
