Other Plagiarism Detection Tools

The following outlines a number of plagiarism detection tools, for free and for-a-fee ($), that may be used by faculty as an alternative to SafeAssign.

CatchItFirst ($)
Created by Vancouver Software Labs, this is the next generation of the Scriptum plagiarism detection software. Marketed for educational and commercial use.

EVE2 Plagiarism Detection System ($)
The EVE2 Essay Verification System “performs a large number of complex searches to find material from any Internet site…EVE2 accepts essays in plain text, Microsoft Word, or Corel Word Perfect format”.

Glatt Plagiarism Program ($)
The Glatt Plagiarism Screening Program eliminates every fifth word of the suspected student's paper and replaces the words with a standard size blank. The student is asked to supply the missing words. The number of correct responses, the amount of time intervening, and various other factors are considered in assessing the final Plagiarism Probability Score.

Google
Can be used as a plagiarism detection tool to track down Internet plagiarism. Use its advanced search engine to locate key phrases/sentences that appear in students' papers. Either use quotations marks around a phrase to look for exact phrasing, or do not use quotation marks for a looser search.

MOSS
From the University of California at Berkeley, Moss (for a Measure Of Software Similarity) "is an automatic system for determining the similarity of C, C++, Java, Pascal, Ada, ML, Lisp, or Scheme programs". Good for use in programming classes.

WCopyfind
“This program examines a collection of document files. It extracts the text portions of those documents and looks through them for matching words in phrases of a specified minimum length”. It does not search the Internet for matching text.
